Instead of lulling Patrick to sleep with its continual cascading on the stones, the water kept him up most of the last three nights. He was the last boy to be initiated on this trip.

He managed the pantsing the night before with a grin-and-bear-it attitude. The jog back naked from the outhouses was only one hundred yards. At least they left him his shoes.

Something about this morning’s initiation didn’t feel right.

The scrunching, papery sound stopped and a shuffling started coming from outside the tent by Dan Hunsinger. But it wasn’t the giggling, guffawing sound that jerkwads make when they are about to lash a bowline around your sleeping bag to tie you up with.

It was an animal sound.

It even smelled animal.
